The FDA officially cleared thermography in as an adjunctive method for the diagnosis of breast cancer. Thermography is a complementary method of the screening process for breast cancer with no contact and allows for multiple screenings of women at any age, including pregnant women. Thermography is a unique and vital technology shown to be effective in uncovering hidden health issues.. Today, breast cancer is a major health risk to all women. Early detection and prevention is the key. Thermographic imaging is a mammogram alternative which takes a thermal picture to determine abnormalities or changes in the breast tissue. Breast thermography can detect irregular patterns.

Thermography's role in breast cancer and other breast disorders is to help in early detection and monitoring of abnormal physiology and the establishment of risk factors for the development or existence of cancer. When used with other procedures the best possible evaluation of breast health is made. Patterns of heat and vascularity can reveal the earliest indications of disease while they are still in the formative stages. Thermography can also detect the presence of heat from an infectious process or from a pre-existing anatomical abnormality (i.e. lump) in the breast. Thermography is also the best way to detect soft tissue trauma or damage.

Breast lesion growth is associated with angiogenesis (production of new blood vessels) and increased blood flow. Such factors result in an increase in the local skin temperature by 1°C–2°C. Thus, the lesion becomes noticeable through thermographic imaging. In fact, breast thermography is a functional (physiological) exam. Thermography (infrared imaging) is controversial and generally not recognized by the medical community, even though the FDA approved breast thermography for breast cancer screening in However, there are studies indicating a thermogram is effective, especially in women with dense breasts. In a review of over 15 studies from , breast thermography has shown an average.

Thermography‐based breast cancer screening has several advantages as it is non-contact, non-invasive and safe. Many clinical trials have shown its effectiveness to detect cancer earlier than any other modality.

Historically, thermography has only been used as an adjunct modality due to the high expertise required for manual interpretation of the thermal images and high false‐positive Cited by: 3. Thermography for Indications Other than Breast Lesions Rubem Pochaczevsky, M.D., F.A.C.R.

This paper is a comment on the statements and recom-mendations of the Office of Health Technology As-sessment (OHTA), which reviewed thermography for indi-cations other than breast lesions.’ Other clinical studies further corroborated that tem.

Reitherman said that thermography is not covered by Medicare or many insurance companies as standard breast care.

On the other hand, Medicare pays for screening mammograms and the Affordable Care. The first breast thermography was performed in by a Canadian surgeon, Dr. Ray Lawson, who noted that patients with breast cancer had a higher skin temperature than other patients.

In the subsequent years, Lawson continued to develop the infrared imaging instrument he called Thermoscan. The device was used for breast cancer detection in. Thermography for indications other than breast lesions. Health Technology Assessment Reports. DHHS Pub.

NCD # Effective Decem Thermography. The most commonly used breast imaging tests at this time are mammograms, ultrasound, and breast MRI. Newer types of tests are now being developed for breast imaging. Some of these, such as breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography), are already being used in some tests are still being studied, and it will take time to see if they are as good as or better than those used today.

Aetna considers thermography (including digital infrared thermal imaging, magnetic resonance (MR) thermography and temperature gradient studies) experimental and investigational for all indications including the following (not an all-inclusive list) because available medical literature indicates thermography to be an ineffective diagnostic technique.

Anyone reading this page document, titled "Thermography for Indications Other Than Breast Lesions," 3 can readily discern the negative bias because its conclusions, that "thermography lacks sensitivity, specificity, or predictive value," are unsupported by the actual text of the document itself.

Another odd thing is that the author, an. Thermography can be used to supplement information from a mammogram to help identify cancer, the organization notes. Thermography tests can also detect subtle changes in breast temperature that indicate a variety of breast diseases other than cancer, too.

These include other forms of fibrocystic syndrome or Paget’s disease. Breast Thermography. SBI Position Statement. The Society of Breast Imaging does not currently support the use of thermography/infrared imaging of the breast as either a screening tool in the detection of breast cancer or as an adjunctive diagnostic tool.

Breast thermography was approved by the FDA in only as an adjunct to mammography. This multimodal approach includes breast self-examinations, physical breast exams by a doctor, mammography, ultrasound, MRI, thermography, and other tests that may be ordered by your doctor.

All of which would be fine as far as it goes, except that thermography shouldn’t be considered anything more than an experimental technique and the above.

According to women’s health specialist, Dr. Christine Horner, thermography can “detect breast cancers much earlier than any other available technology. Because blood vessels ordinarily start to grow before any other significant changes and tumor growth, a thermogram can ‘see’ these abnormal physiological processes as early as years.

Thermography (above) produces an infrared image that shows the patterns of heat and blood flow on or near the surface of the body. A mammogram (above) is an X-ray of the breast which, in this case. Thermography is best suitable to be used along with other tests such as mammography and not as a lone diagnostic test for breast cancer [24].

There have been a plethora of reports suggesting that various hospitals and health care providers are misleading the masses with the false assertions that thermography is a proven alternative to mammography.

Here we go again. The FDA recently issued a warning letter to Total Thermal Imaging, Inc., of La Mesa, California, and Linda Hayes, its president and co-owner, for illegally marketing and distributing an unapproved thermography machine as a sole screening device for breast cancer and other FDA also issued a Safety Communication to warn patients, health care providers, and.

Here are her before and after photos. She also describes what she did to avert breast cancer: Thermography Before Photo. In the BEFORE photo, my right breast (would be the left one in the photo) shows feeder blood flow (new vessels formed to feed cancerous cell cluster).

Looks like a red and yellow snake weaving across my breast. The results of this routine study led to the diagnosis of inflammatory carcinoma in the right breast.

There were no clinical indications at this stage. (Thermography can show significant indicators several months before any of the clinical signs of inflammatory breast cancer, skin.

A mammogram is not perfect at finding suspicious tissue and can miss early lesions. But seeing the structure of the breast tissue is certainly better than just looking for temperature changes.
